The best students I have tutored are the ones who came prepared to their tutoring sessions with questions. Either questions from their homework that they couldn’t do or questions from past HSC papers or past exam papers that they got wrong and need help understanding why and the correct way to approach the question.
Practice past exam papers
The best way to learn maths is by practising questions. Practice practice practice! This could be questions from the textbook. From each exercise or the chapter review at the end of each topic. Or also past school assessments and exams. Past trial papers and past HSC papers.
As an experienced maths teacher I have a collection of past papers to share with the students I tutor so they can practise maths questions at home. This is an essential part of preparing for the HSC.
Mark the questions you need help with
As you complete your homework or a past exam paper, circle or mark the questions that you need help with so you are prepared with specific questions your tutor can help you with.
Ask questions
It is also important to ask your tutor questions until you understand WHY. Rather than just rote learning processes it is important you develop your understanding of the fundamentals so that you can apply this knowledge to unfamiliar problems in the HSC exam.
Bring your calculator
Bring all your maths equipment including your calculator to every tutoring session so you are prepared with everything you need. For online tutoring sessions ensure your device is charged.
Reduce distractions.
Put your phone on aeroplane mode. Turn notifications off on your laptop and if tutoring online go to a quiet room at home with your headphones in.
